Couture Finishing Techniques

Do you get stuck at the end of knitting your sweater because you don't know how to put it all together? Are you frustrated by messy seams and buttonbands? Learn easy and enjoyable techniques to give your garment a professionally finished look. Students will learn how to work a variety of seams, including how to set in a sleeve, how to pick up stitches for a buttonband, how to work a buttonhole, and how to wet and steam block finished items.

Class meets on Saturday, April 18 from 12:30-2:30pm.

Materials Please have the following materials and yarn balled before class begins:

  • 2 colors of worsted weight yarn, one each in a light color and dark color, approximately 50 yards of each
  • US 5 (3.75mm) needles
  • size F or G crochet hook
  • locking stitch markers or safety pins
  • darning needle
  • swatches listed in homework

Skills Needed The ability to knit and purl.

Homework Please complete the following swatches using US 7 needles and a light colored worsted weight wool.

  • Swatch 1 CO 22 sts. Work in stockinette stitch for 4", knitting the fist and last st of every row, regardless of RS or WS. BO all sts.
  • Swatch 2 CO 22 sts. Work in stockinette stitch for 2", knitting the first and last st of every row, regardless of RS or WS. At the beg of RS rows, BO 4 sts once, then 2 sts once, then 1 st twice--14 sts rem after all BO rows have been completed. Work even until piece measures 5" from CO. BO all sts.
  • Swatch 3 CO 22 sts. Work in stockinette stitch for 2", knitting the first and last st of every row, regardless of RS or WS. At the beg of WS rows, BO 4 sts once, then 2 sts once, then 1 st twice--14 sts rem after all BO rows have been completed. Work even until piece measures 5" from CO. BO all sts.
  • Swatch 4 (this will look like a sleeve cap) CO 36 sts. Work in stockinette stitch for 2". BO 4 sts at the beg of the next 2 row--28 sts rem. BO 1 st at the beg of the next 10 rows--18 sts rem. BO 3 sts at the beg of the next 2 rows, then BO 2 sts at the beg of the foll 2 rows--8 sts rem. BO all sts.
